Project Overview

Workout Finder is an interactive web application currently under development that allows users to discover targeted exercises by selecting specific muscle groups on an anatomical diagram. The application aims to simplify the process of finding effective workouts for particular areas of the body.

This project combines my interest in fitness with web development, creating a practical tool that helps users build more effective workout routines. The interactive nature of the application makes it intuitive and user-friendly, even for those new to fitness.

Development Process

Design & Illustration

The first phase of development involved creating a detailed muscular system diagram in Adobe Illustrator. This required extensive research into human anatomy to ensure accuracy while maintaining a clean, user-friendly design that would work well in an interactive context.

After completing the anatomical illustration, I exported it as an SVG to maintain crisp lines and enable interactive functionality with JavaScript. The SVG format allows individual muscle groups to be targeted and manipulated through code.

UI/UX Design

I created multiple layout concepts in Figma, exploring different ways to present the interactive anatomy diagram alongside exercise recommendations. The design process focused on creating an intuitive user flow that would make it easy to select muscle groups and view relevant exercises.

After several iterations and user feedback, I settled on a design that features the anatomical diagram prominently, with exercise recommendations appearing in a clean, organized format when muscle groups are selected. The interface is designed to be accessible to users with varying levels of fitness knowledge.

Current Status

The Workout Finder application is currently in active development. The anatomical diagram has been completed and the basic user interface has been implemented. I am now working on:

  • Building the exercise database with detailed information for each workout
  • Implementing the JavaScript functionality to make the muscle selection interactive
  • Creating the algorithm for exercise recommendations based on selected muscles
  • Developing the responsive design for mobile and tablet devices
  • Testing the user interface with potential users to gather feedback

The project is expected to launch in the coming months, with potential future enhancements including user accounts, progress tracking, and social sharing features.

Technical Challenges

SVG Interactivity

Challenge: Creating an anatomical diagram with multiple selectable muscle groups that respond to user interaction while maintaining visual clarity.

Solution: Carefully structuring the SVG with named elements for each muscle group and implementing JavaScript event listeners to handle hover and click interactions. Using CSS transitions for smooth visual feedback when muscles are selected.

Exercise Recommendation Algorithm

Challenge: Developing a system that can recommend appropriate exercises based on multiple selected muscle groups, considering factors like exercise efficiency and complementary muscle engagement.

Solution: Creating a weighted tagging system for exercises that accounts for primary and secondary muscle engagement, allowing the algorithm to prioritize exercises that efficiently target multiple selected muscles while avoiding redundancy in the recommendations.
